My fight scenes are pretty dry. I just describe events blow by blow. Fight scenes, any scenes, are opportunities to get in the character’s head and provide contextual descriptions. Character development.

My protagonist just got punched in the face for something he knew was wrong, but thought he would get away with. How does he react and why? What are the details of his reaction? Yes, he swings back at his attacker, but how? He lashes out, wild, angry. He’s so mad that he’s in this situation in the first place, but his anger makes him overextend. It puts him in a more vulnerable position to get clobbered by his attacker, chopping more at his pride and propelling him to making more mistakes.

We learn he’s compulsive, he lashes out, and ends up getting himself into worse situations than before.
